Hi Chris, apologies for the delayed response but thank you for your comments and encouragements!

I haven't had a chance to review those no, I wonder how I would be able to access them considering how much has been published in the past 40 years!! If you have any suggestions for how to do this, please let me know.

The whole idea of a purpose placed upon education by governments is a bit problematic I'm finding (due to some great dialogue with others), but as you say the current purpose is not really articulated but seemingly assumed.

This causes issues currently I believe, with governments increasingly trying to impose "evidence-based" policy leaving the values and ideologies opaque. This can be seen as a characteristic of ideology, in that it becomes a kind of mythologised "common sense" that is never questioned.

If the "common sense" is never articulated, I am starting to think that democracy will become increasingly difficult to achieve.
